Bacon (and your burger) just got a billion times better.

Candied bacon is magic. But this is a story of growth. Specifically, it’s about a large company hiring Seedhouse to help develop a new CPG offering. (This happens quite a bit because we understand brands, packaging and Retail dynamics).

(Side note: Seedhouse has actually helped quite a few large corporations break into new categories or adjust positioning to better sell in a different channel. We’ve helped Diamond Foods, James Hardie, Kohler, Lancaster Colony, Georgia Pacific, Cal-Maine, Synder’s-Lance, Justrite Manufacturing, JBS, Brigg’s Healthcare, and YMCA of the USA).

Back to candied bacon… the latest trend in fast casual restaurants, is now available at grocery stores with the launch of Bacon Glazers—a candied bacon seasoning mix. This new CPG offering from one of the nation’s largest spice companies, Red Monkey Foods, allows home cooks to simply sprinkle atop bacon, bake in the oven and enjoy on top of burgers for next level deliciousness!

Naming the Innovation

Red Monkey provides seasonings and spices nationally to the U.S. Foodservice & Hospitality industries. They quickly realized a retail market opportunity that taps the growing trend of seasoned fries. Seedhouse riffed on the candied ham seasoning name “Ham Glaze” to call out the application: bacon. We made ‘glaze’ an active noun ‘Glazers’ to indicate a sweet and spicy mix and its intended destination—bacon!

San Fransisco – Packaging Design Inspiration

Bacon Glazers is a sub-brand of S.F. Salt Co, so the design pays homage to the slanted hilly streets of San Francisco. Mouth-watering candied bacon photography and bright color combinations help bring life to the seasoning mix flavors.

“Bacon Glazers’ packaging perfectly captures the boldness of the flavor and the innovation—I mean, who doesn’t want candied bacon at home!?” says Bryan Vanderwarker, Founder and Principal at Seedhouse.

Color & Differentiation

Bacon Glazers are available in four different blends: Sweet Heat, Jamaican-Style Jerk, Honey Maple, Four Pepper, and in both smaller-sized packets and in larger jars. Bright color combos bifurcate the package and reinforce the flavors—like pink and orange for “Sweet Heat”. The bold colors and different bacon photography help with product differentiation (from SKU to SKU), and findability at shelf. It’s all about inciting trial and encouraging repeat purchase.

Retailer Sell-Thru

Before you get on-shelf at Retail, you have to sell the Buyers. To help with that effort we updated Red Monkey’s messaging approach, tone of voice, information organization and the overall layout design of their sell sheets. Eye-catching and easy-to-read product information plus some POS visual thought starters and you’ve got an interested party.

The new product line and package design made mouths water all over Expo West and we’re excited to see it hit shelves. To learn more about the Seedhouse process, check out our portfolio or other case studies
